Hi Adrian and Everyone,
Okay, I will jump in here. People might think I am stupid, but here goes.

Adrian, I really think that you are right. I really never wanted to ask the question about what apps are. Eventually, I found out what it all meant.

I use Windows, and I know what I talk about when I asked people about Applications and Programs. However, in talking about (apps), I did assume it only described stuff that is purchased from an (Apple) store.

As I began to observe and discuss, I have learned that the word (apps) is now used for Windows Applications and Programs as well. This is a little bit difficult to get used to for me, but I get it, I understand it, and I know, from my background and studies in Speech Communications, that our language is always changing.

So, there you have it. It takes courage to talk about what we know and what we do not know, what we understand and what we do not understand, and to ask questions out in the open. However, we are all here to help one another.

I remember when I did not know a thing about Windows, coming straight from DOS and the Versa Braille. People helped me, and I really appreciated it. Sometimes I do not know when to help, because I think that others are so much more technically aware and know so much more than I do. One has to start somewhere, and we all have to be able to respect each other for the knowledge that we are trying to gain, and the steps we are taking to use the technology that we have. Anyway, that is my take on the whole situation.

Blessings and All the Very Best,
Pat

It's a valid question. In the most literal sense, "app" is just shorthand for "application." But although I can't speak for techies, in ordinary speech people seem to have in mind an app for an Apple device. I don't recall ever encountering a Windows person saying "app" in connection with a Windows machine. We say "application" or "program." Maybe we windows people just aren't hip enough. Or maybe every other Windows person is about to take potshots at me!
