Carolyn: To be honest, I do not know if the "sort order" has anything to do with "messages grouped by conversation", or not.
Can you not change to "descending" by clicking on the "view menu" item, down arrow 3 times to "arrangement submenu", right arrow once, and down arrow 3 times to "reverse sort". If you click on that, the order of messages in "that" folder should reverse - to "descending" if it is currently on "ascending". Good luck. If they are grouped so that each subject requires expanding, then it will default to ascending, regardless of your view settings.
