I have experienced not being able to access the desktop when I have an
aplication like eudora or cuteftp downloading mail in the case of eudora
and a file in the case of cuteftp. One I have an open dialog box somewhere
I am not able to access the desktop.

this computer? If so you need to set your computer up not to use active
desktop.
Hope this could be of some help.
