Spring cleaning the computer desk, I was exploring a: on a bunch of disks
when the computer crashed for no apparent reason. When I rebooted, it
loaded Jaws for Dos, then said 'Loading navboot,' then hung. In my
unsafe-disk past an encounter with an anticmos virus had caused me tons of
grief, including a loss of the boot record on the hard drive, so having
Norton stop whatever this was was a good thing. But what to do about it?
The answer was as follows:
1. reboot the computer with a system floppy (No, I didn't just have one
lying around)
2. When the computer gets to what you hope is the DOS prompt, load a DOS
screen reader.
3. Run navboot.exe from the Norton Anti-virus disk set(by now you can do
DIR a: and find it)
4. when/if it asks for definition files, just keep putting in Norton disks
until it is happy.
5. Go have a drink while it examines every stinkin file in the world.
then try to read the diagnostic message. it isn't really friendly in DOS.
6. You are eventually presented with choices like 'repair' and 'delete'.
The PC cursor just reads 'graphic' with Jaws, so i took the first choice,
which was apparently 'repair.'
7. Have another drink when everything's okay!
And, yes, it was the same anticmos bugger!
