The disadvantage to your imitate-Microsoft proposal, from HJ's standpoint,
would be that you can then actually create as many installations as you
wish. Granted, it's more work, but there are a number of souls out there
who would rather spend 60 seconds than $600.00. :-) I wonder, though,
what would happen if HJ introduced a system whereby registration online is
mandatory, which would permit them to keep track of exactly how many times
a serial number has been installed. They couldn't make this the only
protection scheme without upsetting folks with no immediate Internet
access, but for those people the current keying method could remain an
option. Microsoft already uses OPTIONAL online registration. I think (or
is it fear) that mandatory online product registration is a coming trend.
