I use screen echo set to characters all the time unless I am in a
program that uses the keyboard for something else like inputting other
audio.
incase someone wonders, there is a little program called keyboard to
midi that does just that and it is sort of silly to have each key you
press spoken through the synth as you are playing music.  Be careful
with this though.  I haven't tried it with jfw 3.3 but when I last
worked with it, it would not allow me to change jfw keyboard settings
even after uninstalling it.  I had to re install jfw before I could
get that functionality back.
if you want the program you can get it by accessing the direct file
link below but be aware also that it is problematic to use with a
software synth but if a script or two were written it could be used
better.  the problem is that you have to have access to jfw while
using the program for settings.
