Folks,

I seriously doubt HJ is going to get into the access technology finance
business and I for one don't think they should. Let's not forget that one
needs the computer before one gets the screen reader and all the other
costs associated with technology.

We could discuss the dozens of ways that such a project could be funded and
the necessity of access equipment and all but it seems a bit off the beaten
path of the workings of JFW.

Not too long ago the San Francisco Examiner ran an article talking about
the 200 million dollar war chest that Guide Dogs for the Blind has amassed
in the last few years. Those interested in getting some sort of financing
program started might get better results, and I emphasize might, by
approaching an organization like that and asking them to expand their
mission. I'd think even a simple one percent of the 200 million they have
sitting in the bank collecting interest set out for low interest loans for
access gear would be a worthy project. Or heck, convince billionaire Bill
Gates to add this to the goals of his Gates Foundation and that outfit
probably wouldn't miss the money. Or for that matter convince Microsoft
shareholders to stick just one percent of corporate profit into a loan
program for that matter. Find an athlete or other celebrity to champion
the cause of access technology and get that person to start a foundation
with the goal of doing a technology loan program.
