In response to your inquiry about using z-tree in a Dos window and it not
working, I would ay the following.
As you doubtless know, there are two ways to run Dos programs with JFW,
one marginally functional way, and one entirely acceptable way.
The first, and probably most frequently utilized manner, is to simply go
to the MS-Dos prompt, hit enter and there you are. One must maximize the
window and do other things to optimize this approach. I never use it.
The second, and by very far, most satisfactory way, is to configure JFW to
allow for a separate screen reader when in Dos, accomplishable, as you
probably know, in the configuration menu. With this approach, your current
screen reader, say it's a soft synthesizer, will be put to sleep when you
exit to the Dos prompt and land in the Windows folder.
Now, of course, since no Dos screen reader that I have used with allow for
soft synthesizers, one must have either an internal or external, hardware
speech synthesizer that can be run, say with Jaws 2.31, the program I
always use when in Dos mode. I have a batch file I wrote that lives in the
Windows folder that I call that takes me to the Jaws for Dos directoryy,
brings up my speech, then takes me to the c prompt.
You will finnd, if you have not already done so, that two lines should be
in your config.sys file if you use Dos frequently. They should appear as
follows:
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe ram
switches=/c
The first line, again as you may realize, gives you additional conventional
memory when in Dos and allows for expanded memory. The second line seems
to do much magic, little of which I understand, that brings back thef
eatures and behavior of Dos that we who used to depend upon it know so well.
Now, if you use the second approach and have these lines in your config
file, z-tree should work perfectly. Forgive me, please, if I have assumed
ignorance on your part as to the two above-mentioned approaches. You may
well be ahead of me here. At least, someone who wishes to use Dos with JFW
Windows may benefit from the discussion.
