David and all: I have used both JFW and Window-Eyes 3.1 with Internet
Explorer 5.0. I personally like the way Window-Eyes deals with web pages.
However, I think we need to remember that JFW was first to really get a
handle on Internet Explorer. I'm not saying JFW is better because of this;
I am saying that each screen reader has its strong points over the others.
I wish we could combine them all into one magnificent screen reader
application!!
I have come across forms which Window-Eyes reads better than JFW.
Conversely, I have come across other elements of web pages where JFW does a
better job.
I do believe, however, as I told Ted Henter, that I believe H.J. and GWMicro
have the two best screen readers around. H.J. does a better job of
marketing than any of the other screen readers. Window-Eyes has the
advantage of the user not having to learn a script language in order to
tweak the program. The script language in JFW takes some time (at least,
for me) to learn. I wish it was something that came easily to me, but it
isn't.
It would all be much easier, I think, if Microsoft did what they promised
they would do a couple years ago. That is, they said they were going to
start telling software developers that they had to incorporate MSAA before
they could say their product was Windows 95 compatible, or something like
that.
