Not clear if this is a JFW issue, if not slap my fingers or assist off list
please.
I just received Open Book RUBY and what is now called an HP6390 scanner with
document feeder. I run JFW 3.2 on a P ii 350 Windows 98 and a SCSI disk
controller with a port out the rear.
I installed RUBY, all went well I think except for something about
programmes to be called up from RUBY, it offered WordPad and MS-Word, I
would prefer WordPerfect which was not offered but in the end I could not
make it give me either, not a big deal, can probably get tech support for
that in due course. Good news is that I seem to be able to move in and out
of RUBY without loosing JAWS, I have read about others trouble with that
here.
I then installed the HP Scanner software, man there are a lot of things
there, takes a long time.
According to the broad sheet I which cme with the scanner I might have been
asked for USB or SCSI but was not, thing is though at the end of the install
you get to re-start Windows and she wouldn't re-boot. Gave me a Fatal error
message on screen after windows loaded but before JAWS came up. Time after
time I closed the window and got the Blue Screen of Death.
I booted in DOS, coppied the System.bak file over the system.ini file and
windows and jaws came back up.
I can go into RUBY, press the space bar to begin scan and the scanner starts
up but I get a message that scan failed. Nothing I do seems to activate the
document feeder however, and of course it doesn't read.
I tried to get into the HP scanning software help files they are all ADOBE
PDFs, can't read 'em. I was looking for some hints or what ever.
Now, during the install of the HP Scanner software there was certainly a lot
of ADOBE installation going on, didn't seem there was much I could do about
that and since my kids may well use it some times I didn't much care. I did
have a similar boot problem though about a year ago when loading PhotoShop,
well actually when uninstalling it, fixed it in the same way by over writing
system.ini with system.bak, I am guessing that much at least is not a JFW
issue but an ADOBE one.
Now, questions:
Is there something in the install which I missed? None of the screens read
aloud, had to be read with JAWS cursor, it is possible I missed something
probably in the HP Scanner software installation.
I have connected the Scanner with the USB connection for now and to the
extent that RUBY does activate the scanner I am guessing it is alive but I
had intended to use the SCSI intervace, only thing is the cable for that
purpose does connect into the scanner but is way too narrow to fit into the
female port on the rear of the machine. This is clearly not a JFW issue but
what in heck is going on here? It is an adaptec SCSI interface purchased in
September 1998, a year ago.
Same old problem, can't get any assistance at all over the week-end and I
work during the week.
