Steve Jobs at the  WWDC:

"Jobs also confirmed that iPhone won't support Java. "[It's] not worth
building in," he said. "Nobody uses Java anymore. It's this big
heavyweight ball and chain."

Whilst this might not seem to matter just for the  iPhone (although it
would have been nice to display  Jmol in  iPhone's Safari browser), I
suspect these ultra-mobile "multitouch" devices will increasingly become
more important for far more activities.  If Java is truly not used any
more, what will replace it?
