?? (pdf)latex is supposed to run on all known platforms. I used the 
Windows Miktex distribution, but all other distributions, teTex etc, 
should be fine as well.

You could do without pdflatex, but then you need Adobe Professional.
Before the question is asked: no, I do not know if an u3d file can be 
integrated in a Powerpoint presentation. I never use Powerpoint by the way.
