Two of my favorites were The Little Princess by Frances Hodgeson Burnett and Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. It's hard to compare the two books, but they do both deal with kids who are treated poorly by their peers. I was picked on sometimes, so they were a comfort. The heroines were both serious, smart little girls, as was I in those days.
