Boxing Day is a stat holiday here in Canada too - I thought it was one everywhere! (But our Thanksgiving is on a Monday in October, and we only get one extra day off and I think the Americans get Thursday AND Friday, so they'd get a four-day weekend.
I think the boxing part relates to giving alms to the poor around Christmas time.
