Colin, The funny thing here in the Bay Area, is that it is frequently voted one of the most dog- (and cat-) friendly areas in the country. Now, having lots of kids and/or dogs is just about the only excuse i can think of to actually need an SUV; I don't particularly like them, they *are* huge and have lousy mileage -- and yet, they are *so* politically incorrect in some parts of the Bay Area, that if you have one -- even if you really need one -- you get lots of scorn from your neighbors. One of my favorite writers, Cynthia Heimel, who used to be a columnist for the Village Voice, and who wrote both "Sex Tips For Girls" and (twenty years later) "Advanced Sex Tips For Girls" (neither book was really much about sex) -- she lives in Berkeley, has six or seven dogs (she rescues damaged dogs from the SPCA), and needs a vehicle to transport them to areas where they can run free -- but the vituperous attacks she gets for owning an SUV amaze her! Even after she explains *why* she has such a vehicle, some people don't give up. Sigh. Hope all your babies are well, Colin! fondly, hugs, walt
