Well, what I would say off the top about some of those stats (like the one from the RIAA about 45+ doubling in share) is that you have to be sure that they distinguish gifts and separate them from their purchases. At one point I remember reading that some 50% of the cd's teens (13-17) own are gifts. I would also say that you'd have to separate catalog. If a market segment is buying their 5th copy of "Hotel California" or "Dark Side of the Moon" it doesn't really represent much in the way of segment growth and it will benefit the majors who hold the catalogs more than anyone else. Ultimately older folks will be the ones buying more CD's than anyone else because they will still care about and want the object. Doesn't necessarily mean they'll be buying more music than anyone else. I think it's a troubling case to prove, but I'll let you know if I bump into anything that helps.
