Voice coaches say that talking the 'wrong' way can be a major
strain on the voice. Late into her career, Stevie Nicks had to learn
not to talk in a gruff voice because it was ruining her singing voice,
which is now better than ever.
Besides coughing and throat clearing, (as Jenny said), they also
say don't smoke. There is no way you can continually pull
dry smoke across your vocal cords and not have it effect
your voice.
