The Canadian woman I was talking about, Kimberley Rogers, collected $13,500 in welfare while receiving student loans of $32,000 between 1996 and 1999. That got her six months house arrest, 18 months of probation, her welfare benefits cut for three months, and after that an amount to be deducted from future benefits to repay the stolen money, although the payments were already barely enough to pay rent. She had a history of depression and was 8 months pregnant with her first child, and she killed herself while under house arrest in a blazing hot appartment in August 2001. There's a website campaigning for change in her name, if anyone's interested at http://dawn.thot.net/Kimberly_Rogers/

I'm not sure about that Mags. One can always can get student loans here no
matter what one's income. Outright grants and some scholarships may be
another issue. I don't think the welfare system and the student loan system
is connected here.
