Further to that, here's what Joni had to say in her 1985 "Rock Master Class" BBC
interview with Tony Hale:

JM: I never thought I would become a political animal -- God, I hope not -- it's like
an intellectual or political animal, I always hoped not (laughs). But censorship was
rearing its ugly head. There were insinuations -- okay, church and state were holding
hands -- are holding hands. You'd see Reagan on the 700 Club which is a powerful
evangelist broadcast, and they would be insinuating that any criticism that was raised
against the president was communist propaganda with a feeling that there were certain
dangerous right-wing tendencies happening in the country and that there was a massive
vote to support them. It seemed like an important time to make certain statements. You
know, "use it or lose it" comes to mind.

You can of course read the whole thing at:

(Thanks to Lindsay Moon for the transcription)

And if you want to go one better and listen to it, it's available on CD and really is
recommended listening...besides a wonderfully enjoyable & informative conversation,
Joni plays a number of DED songs acoustically on piano & guitar, and even does a
paprika plains-like piano improv piece that I just adore.
