[PT] The first time that you insert the soft synth, just go to the empty FX field and hit the applications key as you have done. [PT] Once you have done this, the soft synth is inserted until you delete it.
If you close the plug-in dialog page for the synth with Alt+F4, then you want to follow the steps I've given before by finding the first FX field and then arrowing to the FX Rapture field and hitting enter. Then the previously inserted synth dialog wil open up. As for why you can't hear the output, my only guess is that you need to route the output of the synth to an audio channel. It is not sufficient to just insert the softh synth - it also needs an audio channel for output.
