How about trying Interbase (www.interbase.com). Its small, embedable,
trivial to install, and has a jdbc type 3 driver (I think - 100% java
driver talking non-native protocol to a binary proxy)

Definatly worth a look. My current system is
IIS->JRun->CORBA->Interbase, and it works like a dream (albeit under NT)
