I think you're on the right track here, Larry. I thought of something like this for providing access to JTS functions, and have actually implemented something similar in the JTS TestBuilder. The GeometryFunction dialog probably would have warped into something like this with a bit more development.
The nice thing about having a floating window is that you can provide a lot more feedback to the user while executing a function, and the user is able to see the context (e.g. input params) while the function is executing.
