Yes, I see the difference

I think they do. From my point of view, styling individual features is 
the way cartographers thought
before informatic era.
Nowadays, the most flexible approach is to attach attributes to features 
(with semantic reflecting the
real feature, not the cartographer subjectivity),
then cartographers can represent features based on these attributes, and 
change appearance easily,
depending on what they want to show.

OK, I can also agree with that too. I'm sure styling features directly 
can be more efficient (and nicer)
in some situations.
