THIS WEEK'S THEME: Marys

Learn about eight amazing Marys in this week's
W.O.W. newsletter!

1. The Majestic Queen Mary
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021801/&Userid;

This Mary -- a steam ship -- weighs in at more than
81,000 tons and crossed the Atlantic 1,001 times
between 1929 and 1967. View images of her spectacular
decks, read a time line of her historical voyages
and compare her to Titanic. (Hint: Titanic was
smaller in length and nearly 50 percent lighter.)

2. Mary Shelley & "Frankenstein"
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021802/&Userid;

Almost from birth, Mary Shelley was exposed to tragedy.
Her mother died in childbirth. When she was old enough
to walk, Mary and her father would stroll down to the
St. Pancras churchyard where her mother was buried. He
taught her how to spell her name by tracing her mother's
inscription on the tombstone. Years later, two family
members committed suicide. Soon after she penned
"Frankenstein." Discover how her past influenced the
themes and dark, Gothic overtones of this famous novel.

3. Mary, Queen of Scots
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021803/&Userid;

Mary Stuart was born at Linlithgow Palace in 1542, the
daughter of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Six
days after her birth, her father died, and she became
Queen of Scotland. Immediately, Scotland's pro-English
and pro-French factions plotted to gain control of
Mary. Trace her turbulent life from birth to her
execution in 1587. Find out more!

4. Mary Cassatt
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021804/&Userid;

Cassatt was born into an upper middle-class
Pennsylvania household in 1844. At the age of 17, Mary
enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,
taking her first steps into the world of art. Four
years later, a trip to Europe introduced her to the
emerging impressionist movement. Edgar Degas invited
her to join the impressionists, and she soon began
experimenting with printmaking. View more than a
dozen of Cassatt's most famous works online.

fossil hunters. This Mary, along with her husband
Louis, discovered the 1.75-million-year-old remains
of Homo habilis in 1972 at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania.
Her most famous find came early in her career in 1948

feat, she went on to join Susan B. Anthony and others
in the women's suffrage movement, and later was the
