THIS WEEK'S THEME: Barriers

This week's W.O.W. removes the "barrier" to
some excellent Web sites!

1. Great Barrier Reef
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022001

This barrier is home to the world's largest collection
of coral reefs, boasting more than 400 types of coral
and 1,500 species of fish. Rising off the coast of
northeastern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is
actually a collection of 2,800 individual reefs. Wow!
View stunning photos -- online.

2. Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB)
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022002

Here's a special barrier that protects the most vital
organ in the human body -- your brain. Your BBB acts
as a gatekeeper, keeping large molecules, fat cells,
charged particles and other substances from entering.
Find out how to keep your BBB strong and healthy.

3. African-American Barrier Breakers in Sports
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022003

Until Jackie Robinson, Charles Follis, Chuck Cooper,
Willie O'Ree, John Shippen and Althea Gibson broke
through the race barrier, African-Americans were barred
from competing in baseball, football, basketball, hockey,
golf and tennis respectively. Discover how these athletes
overcame decades of discrimination to play alongside
their largely white counterparts.

4. Who's the Barrier: Man or Mother Nature
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022004

Off the coast of Louisiana, a collection of barrier
islands dot the Gulf of Mexico. Humans have been living
there for generations, affecting the island's evolution.
This lesson plan challenges students to answer one
question: Do human activities affect the environment, or
does the environment affect humans and their activities?

5. Chuck Yeager Breaks the Sound Barrier
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022005

Today's military fighter jets and supersonic passenger
planes fly faster than the speed of sound every day.
Prior to 1947, engineers and test pilots weren't at all
sure what would happen when the sound barrier was broken.
Here's your chance to experience Chuck Yeager's historic
flight into the history books! Grab the virtual controls
of Yeager's Bell X-1 and push the speed envelope at this
fast-paced site.

6. Underwater Exploration: HMS Pandora
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022006

In 1789, the crew of the HMS Bounty mutinied and cast
their captain, William Bligh, adrift in the South Pacific.
A year later, Pandora, a 24-gun frigate, set sail from
England to hunt down the mutineers and bring them back to
face punishment. After finding 14 former crewmembers,
Pandora set sail for home, only to strike a coral reef
off Australia and sink. Read about recent attempts to
dive into the wreck to recover artifacts at this page.

7. Economics: Barriers to Trade
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-022007

Proponents of free trade decry trade barriers as inherently
anticompetitive. After all, if the benefits of free trade
are so clear, why are countries imposing tariffs and trade
barriers to block or raise the prices of imported goods?
Untangle the pros and cons of these economic barriers at
this in-depth destination.

benefits do they offer to both human and animal populations?
