THIS WEEK'S THEME: Homonyms

Homonyms: Don't judge a word by its spelling!

1. Bark
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-023901

In German it's "woof." In Italian it's "woof." In
English it's "woof." Well, actually, it's always
"woof" and it's one of the sounds that dogs make
to communicate. This sound, known as the bark, is
often worse than the bite. Learn why dogs bark at
bigchalk. (Who let the dogs out anyway?) :-)

The bark is the outermost hard material of many
trees and plants. The bark protects the internal
functions of the plant from dangerous environmental
elements. Many large old trees have bark that is
very thick, gnarled and dark in color. Find out

3. Fly
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-023903

Throughout history, human beings have been enamored
with flight. As early as the 15th century, Leonardo
da Vinci created drawings and plans to enable man
to fly. Today, human beings are well versed in the
physics of lift, flight and air pressure, and we
depend on flying for our modern way of life.

4. Fly
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-023904

"Shoo fly, don't bother me." "Excuse me, waiter,
but there is a fly in my soup." These are just two
examples of how flies manage to bother people in
everyday life. But, these creatures deserve more
respect. They have been around since the dawn of
humanity and are the only flying insects that have
just two wings.

5. Blues
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-023905

The blues is a category of music that matured in
the early 20th century. Performed originally by
African Americans in the United States, this music
was created as a forum for performers to vent their
troubles, hardships and pain. Blues singers such as
Bessie Smith paved the way for many different
varieties of modern-day music, including hip-hop
and R&B.

During the Dark Ages, a small but well educated group
of people called the Moors invaded and conquered the
Iberian Peninsula. They were noted for their advanced

BIGCHALK WEB SITE OF THE MONTH

Christopher Columbus & The European Voyages of Exploration

In mid-October each year, American's pause to reflect on
the life and work of Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus.
To many students, Columbus' journey to the Americas is
the most well-known and studied aspect of the European
voyages of exploration.

However, there is a far richer tale to be told about the
countries, events and people who populate the history of
these fifteenth and sixteenth century journeys. Many
historians point to these trips as the triggers to the
process of globalization, linking once distant countries
and peoples for the first time. In addition, while many
believe that the seeking of profit was the primary
motivator for sea exploration, these early explorers
were equally interested in expanding Europe's knowledge
about the world. Find out more about this special era
of exploration.
