I got in on great pricing by buying Studio MX (pre-'04) during the free '04
upgrade period. I agree that it's annoying having to jump through hoops to
get good pricing on rollout software, but it worked out great. I think I
heard about it on this email list, even.

Generally speaking, the MX 04 launch was a failure. Many of the products
weren't ready for market, and the launch was sped up because Adobe had a
studio product coming out the following month. If they'd gone through a
more-complete launch phase, they probably would have done pre-ordering and a
beta period where you could get in on better pricing. Hopefully, they've
learned that this launch style doesn't work well. (The goal was to avoid
losing market share to Adobe, but that was never a real risk. Because the
launch went badly, sales didn't meet expectations during the launch quarter,
so the stock took a beating. Expensive lesson for those
stock-option-holding folks at MACR, I'm sure.)
