I'm hesitant here because it introduces new code paths in pkgbuild (to check if the tarball has been unpacked already and to fiddle with snapshots if necessary) and, while it's not unheard of for us to tweak the build tools a little if it helds getting the job done, this sounds like a fragile option to me. However, if Ben can get this done quickly and save himself a few minutes with every build, then that improves things (eventually) everywhere.
