Well, to state the obvious, flite probably wants a sound device to output to. Is it available or is it hogged by arts? If so, either try enabling Auto Suspend after 1 second in the Sound System kcontrol module, or configure vchangs (ref. http://freebsd.kde.org/faq.php#q9).
