Well, to state the obvious, flite probably wants a sound device to output to. 
Is it available or is it hogged by arts? If so, either try enabling Auto 
Suspend after 1 second in the Sound System kcontrol module, or configure 
vchangs (ref. http://freebsd.kde.org/faq.php#q9). And beware of 
http://freebsd.kde.org/faq.php#q16 after you're done with the Sound System 
kcontrol module.
