No, I don't believe it's that, I've been using vchans=4 for 
a couple of years now. I've just checked and arts is still set to 
use /dev/dsp0.2.
As stated above, I've put the full path to flite in the configuration.

I've found it works fine if I log in as a different user, so it's something 
that's screwed up in my settings. I've had a problem with my konsole settings 
for a while that's specific to my user settings too so I think it's time to 
ditch my settings and start afresh.
Only thing is I don't want to lose important stuff like my address book, gpg 
settings, wallet, bookmarks etc. so guess I'll have to backup and selectively 
delete stuff until the problem goes away.
