Every so often after a KDE upgrade I've got to go through this. Thankfully the last couple of upgrades have gone smoothly, but I sure know what you're talking about. Personally, I move the .kde directory to .kde-bak, let KDE create a new config directory, then just move on over the critical stuff. Things like KMail configs, KJots notes and the like. These app specific items tend to upgrade nicely, where the KDE environment configs tend to cause issues.
