Ok I trust you but I do like to understand as well so maybe you could
point me to a source of enlightenment.

I hope you do not mind my saying but I think you jumped to an incorrect
conclusion that I had ignored Michael's good advice. The sequence he
suggested was followed before running the make install in the
circumstances you described. The error came from that run.

I gave all the info which followed the error and based on that data a kind
soul told me how to deal with it so I am very gratful.

I do wish there was an info file with every port that had general
information of that nature in it...but there is not time to do everything
I guess.
