I run -STABLE on my desktop because I run -STABLE on my servers.
-STABLE is advertised as "stable" and that's what I need, much more
than performance or new features.
When -STABLE is retargeted, and when I believe that, I'll
move my desktop and my servers. I don't assign any blame or animus
to the FreeBSD KDE folks - they've done a yeoman job keeping things
running as long as they have. I regard it as more of a consequence
of a very long period of development in -CURRENT getting SMP and
such to work right. The ageing of -STABLE is an unfortunate
consequence.
Which doesn't make any difference. -STABLE is what I need,
whatever code that actually may be.
From what I've heard about FreeBSD 6, I'll probably upgrade
everything to it in about six months, but that's just me. The
FreeBSD project as a whole needs to come to grips with the fact that
a significant part of its customer base needs -STABLE, not -CURRENT.
Or, at least, believes the advertising.
