Having spent the last three months in an under-developed country where
there exist no real chains or big brands (no McDonalds, no Starbucks, no
Wal-Mart) you eventually come to appreciate the upside of some of these
establishments: I often wish for at least stable quality and a certain
level of professionalism that so many mom and pop shops lack.

The only chain there is KFC. And I must admit, it is sometimes nice to
take a break from eating pho from a little table two feet off the ground
while sitting on rickety little plastic kindergarden chairs in front of
someones home converted into a sidewalk restaurant and go into KFC and
know exactly what to expect and get it the exact same way every time.
The chicken tastes just like here in the US and it tastes good. And for
a pretty reasonable price too.

So while I am often quite hard on the big corporate giants who are
dominating our economy and our government they do have their uses. As
usual, the best path is probably somewhere in between the extremes.
