I am far more afraid of a society that commands me that
I must provide an equal service to everyone, regardless of the costs
borne by me, than I am of a society where I might be expected to pay
more when I want more of a good or service.
So it's unreasonable to pay more for better service? Really?
Can someone sell me a quad core 64-bit mega desktop for five bucks because
that's what I think it's worth?
Is valet parking free?
Do you leave tips at restaurants? Do you leave a better tip for better
service, or does everyone get 10%? "I know we have a party of 20 and that
you worked really hard for the past three hours, but I don't think I
should have to pay/tip extra for better service. Here's your 5 bucks."
Have fun eating loogies next time you dine at that establishment.
The idea that I shouldn't have to pay more for better service is ludicrous.
If a large individual sits next to me on a plane I have the right to get
off that plane and get on a later flight, or get a refund and fly a
different carrier altogether, sure. But in this age people expect that
there are 30 flights from San Diego to Podunk, Idaho every day and God
forbid my seat isn't at least as comfortable as my recliner at home. I've
never seen it written on any ticket I've bought for any flight that they
promise to provide me comfort. There's nothing comfortable about being
cooped up in a tin can 40,000 feet above the face of the earth. Even if I
was the only passenger on board, it wouldn't be comfortable.
A majority of airliners we fly in were designed and built well before
laptops were invented, so boo hoo that your laptop doesn't fit on the tray
table. I wouldn't expect a '68 VW bug to power a GPS system, a DVD player
and have antilock brakes any more than I'd expect a 737 to accomodate the
modern business flyer.
I rue the day I show up at an airport and the airline I choose sends me
away because I'm white. I'd find it hard to convince myself that this is
okay, it's just business, and they can run their airline however they
want. That's where this line of thinking is headed.
