You are conflating John's arguments and my arguments, just so you know.

The idea that I shouldn't have to pay more for better service is ludicrous.
John doesn't say this. And neither do I.
However, the airline system is *not* a free market. My money does not
get to vote on a full slate of options. As these options are
constrained by the fact that the airlines are a public monopoly, the
airlines have to deal with the fact that they are required to endure
some level of servicing the public that may not always be profitable.
A majority of airliners we fly in were designed and built well before
laptops were invented, so boo hoo that your laptop doesn't fit on the
tray table. I wouldn't expect a '68 VW bug to power a GPS system, a DVD
player and have antilock brakes any more than I'd expect a 737 to
accomodate the modern business flyer.
Unfortunately, you miss the point--your argument is exactly backwards.
My much larger laptop used to fit just fine in coach 10 years ago.
I rue the day I show up at an airport and the airline I choose sends me
away because I'm white. I'd find it hard to convince myself that this is
okay, it's just business, and they can run their airline however they
want. That's where this line of thinking is headed.
Ayup.
