I don't want to waste the space on the screen where Thunderbird has
the flame and tells me it thinks a message is junk. I have other ways
to determine this and would like a bigger message pane, thank you very
much.
I've unchecked all the boxes in the Account Settings dialog under
Junk, and in privacy preferences in the Junk tab. It doesn't seem to
make a difference. Anyone know a way to turn this off?
See <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls>
You can also go into the Advanced Preferences and filter on "junk" You
will see an entry for "mail.toolbars.showbutton.junk" Try setting the
value to false and see if it helps.

Yeah, I was going to recommend that you go into "Tools->Account
Settings-><account>->Junk Settings" and just disable junk mail filtering
altogether.
