Belated reply, but how about Skype? It uses 256-bit encrypted peer-to- peer traffic with certificates for identity verification. (http://www.skype.com/security/security/ )

Apparently it's quite the popular solution among Chinese dissidents who wish to communicate without fear of government spying.

The only mark against it I can think of is the fact that the Skype software is closed source, so there's some amount of blind trust required there.
