Right now I backup my desktop to my raid5 file server occasionally, RAID1 is planned on the next upgrade. Said file server is 5x500GB sATA in softraid 5 with md0 taking up the entire space. On top of that is LVM2 and three volume groups with xfs. Performs at around 30-40MB/s, cpu no problem, PCI controllers = bottleneck. (If anyknow knows a "dumb" 8 port sATA II PCIe controller, let me know.) Moved the box from Slackware to Debian etch. had lots of issues with Slackware since it didn't come with raid scripts and mine occasionally caused resyncs after reboots. Now all fine. Array is storage only, OS runs on a seperate disks. Thought crossed me of course to branch off a couple of megs but I got no idea how much performance impact I'll have if the disk heads constantly have to sweep from md0 to md1.
