I would like to hear how others have solved this problem. I don't have a TV, so package cable deals won't work for me.
I don't have a TV either. In fact for the better part of the last 10 years I haven't had a TV. You can easily get cablemodem without the cable TV service.
So far, AT&T's DSL "High Speed Internet Express" at 1.5 Mbps / 384 Kbps for $19.99 per month, looks best to me, even though I'd be happier giving my business to a smaller company.
I had it once around 2000 and the service was absolutely horrible. They left me down for a week. That was 7 years ago but I'm still annoyed. I always recommend Speakeasy.net. I doubt they are the cheapest but they have the best service, are very Linux friendly (and always have been) and are a small company which I like to support when I can.
I really wish I could get DSL here in Poway. :( I've lived in this house for 7 years now and still no DSL.
