When I had dial-up, I set a cron-job at about 3am to do updates. Since
it was daily, it was not too bad and I was usually asleep at 3am. My
cron job only downloaded, as I never trust automated things to actually
run the patch/updates for me.

Cable or DSL will be a lot faster, and not too much more expensive. Look
at what is available in your area.
