Firewire webcam. Like the Apple iSight or similar. That is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. The reason is that there is one and only one official standard for doing video over firewire (probably thanks to Apple). So Linux will support any firewire camera. I have even plugged the firewire output of a Sony Handycam (which usually records to an 8mm tape) into a Linux box and captures video off of it. The problem with the USB cameras is that they all do video differently depending on chipset and there are dozens if not hundreds of different chipsets and drivers needed to make them work. The firewire cameras cost a bit more but they are definitely worth it in terms of quality, reliability, and ease of use. > (And btw, can I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300 as a webcam?) No idea.
