Yeah...I'm not sure when or how but a long time ago webcam became the name
for any camera you hook up to your computer. The first camera connected to
a personal computer that I ever saw write jpg's to a file which the
webserver streamed out using a cgi. So it seemed natural to call it a
webcam then. But then video conferencing started picking up steam and the
popular IM clients started to integrate video support and the webcam name
stuck.
