Ok, one for the newbie list since I'm a total n00b here:
I'd like to get me a webcam, should be auto-focussing, hvae 640x480 at least
(more=better) and pump out 15fps min.
I've been googling around but can't find any site that lists linux compatible
devices like for example linuxprinting does for printers.
What rules of thumb take me to a good cam here?
(And btw, can I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300 as a webcam?)
I think I'm misunderstanding the definition of a webcam. Isn't a webcam
supposed to be a stand-alone device that connects to your network?
That aside, consider using a standard video camera and a video capture
card. I bought a cheap color video camera for $24 that produces
composite video out, and a capture card ($12) that works with the IVTV
drivers <http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Main_Page>. My TV turner card
(Hauppauge PVR-150) also has composite video input. You can also get
many different types of cameras. I'm considering getting an outdoor
version to set up as my "lizard cam" to watch the lizards on my fence.
