Hello Dennis, To start I would not go any smaller than an 1835 VW. It would be about 60-65HP @ 3300 rpm. I don't think you can get a VW up to or over 100hp without doing something crazy to it. Dan Deihl ran a Turbo for awhile, but he said that you have to fly high and in cool air all of the time. It would be great for long high trips, but not much fun low and slow. A 2180 will get about 80 hp @ 3300-3400rpm.
Lee and a 200 mph cruise. maybe with the new airfoil and an O200 with a strong tailwind. Or a Jabiru 3300. but who has that kind of money hanging around???? Hello Group, I am new to KRs and was wondering, to have a high performing KR2 what is the recommended size VW engine and HP rating? Also what would be the minimum and maximum VW HP for the KR2?? Is anyone flying behind a turbocharged VW and happy with the flight performance? Are there many Corvair people in this group that have high performance KRs? Is a 200 mph cruise really attainable? What I can tell you is that you do need to dump the POSA. Many of us use Ellison, AeroCarb, or RevFlow. I like the Ellison and will let others tell you about their preferred carb. The problem with Ellison, is that you can no longer get the EFS-2, which is what you need for that VW. Due to this problem, if I were doing it again, I would find a carb that worked on a 65 HP Continental or Lycoming and go with that. She already has an 1835 VW with a POSA carb on her, but my EAA tech advisor has encouraged me to look into a float bowl carb, for various reasons. Great Plains has the 1821 updraft carb and I have a lot of respect for Steve Bennett's work with the VW based engine. Any more info that anyone wants to offer on the fuel system? The floors open, and I will be using all of this to make my decision soon. Assuming I pass my PPL the 1st time, the VW case will be getting split open by mid June.
