we seem to have gotten ratholed into which-make-style-is-better wars.
When it comes to integration into the solaris build process, there are
essentially only two credible options:
1) construct a new set of solaris-style makefiles and discard the
originals.
2) write a wrapper/bootstrap script which fires up the original build
system based on tools found in the existing build environment.
converting to a build system alien to both the original distribution
*and* the solaris sources is not worth discussing.
