Just under 250 miles each way. Our son's college is surrounded by cornfields in Iowa and the soil was looking wonderfully black where it was freshly ploughed. We came back via Dubuque this time (which takes longer, but is prettier). The rolling hills in Iowa and NW Illinois are very pretty and there was lots of blossom out. we tried to visit the Japanese gardens in Rockford,. The internet site we connected to said they closed at 8pm but it turned out to be 4pm, so we didn't get to see them.
