Yes. I used one when I worked for Icelandic Airlines (Icelandair, now) in the 70s and although we had a computer reservations system, we still sent certain types of messages to other stations via telex. As Sue said, we would type it up first, and then feed the tape through the machine in real time. And David, a "data processor" was a computer! (Today we say CPU or central processing unit.) My DH wrote computer systems (now referred to as "software") and used to answer the phone at work, "Data Processing, Bradford speaking". The early mainframes he worked on weren't even as powerful as the 286 someone mentioned, and it took considerable skill to juggle complex programs and large amounts of data with comparatively little memory. And what about punch cards for computers? I'm surprised no one has mentioned those. Of course, it was still the computer age, and still modern compared to wringer washing machines or wood fed stoves with a boiling copper! <g>
