Whatever the story behind this bobbin, it is certainly very beautiful. The story that was suggested may not be too far off the mark. It would certainly not be one of a bucketload that was made to commemorate a single engagement during the early days of the First World War. With the wooden shaft and only silver top and tail it would be quite useable, I think. I have several all silver bobbins, (wedding anniversary, job leaving bobbins) and they are quite awkward to use. The difference in weight makes my fingures stumble over them on the pillow. Gold would be hopeless in this respect. It's much too heavy.
