Now you have gone completely the opposite way, thats amazing the lengths, but does make sense as I have seen photos of your lace desk. I must say that the more bobbins I have on my pillow the longer my threads seem to need to be in order to get them out of the working centre area without feeling cramped. I am really glad I asked the question because we have had some very interesting answers.

Thank you all it has been very enlightening.

"I have been watching video footage of bobbin lace being made and noticed the very short amount of thread between last worked pin and the top of the bobbin
and wondered what most of you all do."

For me, it all depends on a number of things: such as - the number of bobbins, the size of the pillow etc.

Now that I have virtually a lace desk (rather than pillow) I can afford to really spread my bobbins out when there are many of them. Hence whilst working on pieces like Miss Channer's mat I sometimes have the length of thread up to 12" (30cm) long. It doesn't not seem to make any difference to the work itself, and I can't say I've had any more breakages because of the extra length.
